Honor Our Nation’s Finest, Donate Blood on Veterans Day

In honor of the sacrifices that our men and women in the military have made for their country, LifeStream invites all healthy residents to give the gift of life on Tuesday, November 11 to recognize and pay tribute to Our Nation’s Finest. In honor of Veterans Day, donors will have an opportunity to sign a card to thank our service men and women, veterans and first responders.

For every lifesaving donation, participants receive points as part of the “Gift of Life” Donor Loyalty Program that may be redeemed for items through LifeStream’s online store.

Donors are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food or toiletries which will be distributed to area food banks prior to Thanksgiving.

Give Life When You Give Blood

In a year of natural disasters, an uncertain economy and a housing crunch, many people in our area are faced with a choice – do I pay my mortgage and fill up my car to get to work, or do I put food on the table for my family?

During this season of giving, you have an additional opportunity to save lives. When you donate at any LifeStream donor center or mobile blood drive from October 26 through November 22, you may donate non-perishable food items and toiletries that will be distributed to area food banks prior to Thanksgiving.

Suggested items to donate are

  • canned fruits, juices, meats and vegetables
  • boxed foods (cereal, pasta and rice mixes)
  • rice, pasta and sauces
  • soap (laundry, dish and hand)
  • paper products
  • toiletries for men and women

Thank you for giving the Gift of Life – in so many ways.

Why we changed our name.

Many of our faithful donors have been asking, “Why did you change your name from Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties to LifeSteam?” We hope this will help you understand our reasons.

First of all, LifeStream is no longer geographically bound by San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, having recently expanded into serving hospital partners in Los Angeles, Orange and S an Diego Counties.

Additionally, about four years ago, our organization made a cultural commitment to become one of the premier blood centers serving its community in the United States.  We started on this journey by clearly defining our mission…Saving lives by connecting donors and patients through the gift of blood.  We understood that this could not be accomplished without creating partnerships with donors, hospitals, our employees and the community we serve.

We embraced a subtle yet powerful cultural value.  We no longer had customers, we had partners.  Increased accountability and responsibility is expected from partnerships.  Blood donors, the altruistic warriors, who give their time and gift of life, must always be treated like the heroes they are.  Hospitals, who depend on our products and services to help them save the lives of patients in our community, must never be let down.  Our employees, the link between the blood donor and patient, must be treated with respect, know that they are valued and provided opportunities for professional and personal growth.  Our community must always be proud of our professional behavior, require that we serve as ambassadors for the good will of its people and encourage us to find ways to give back to a community so giving to us.

A little more than two years ago we embarked on an initiative to become a wellness partner in healthcare to the communities we serve.  Saving lives is a mission we have always embraced.  With closer examination, we recognized that this mission had a single path, focused solely on saving the lives of patients at the hospitals we served.  A noble cause indeed!  We challenged ourselves to expand this concept for saving lives and asked how we could also include donor, employee and community partners as part of this initiative.  Could we offer programs that may have a role in saving their lives?  We initiated the Gift of Life Donor Loyalty Program which rewards dedicated donors with a choice of free healthcare panels so that they may evaluate their risk for heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer or thyroid disease.  In order to ensure a continuous flow of donors able to provide the Gift of Life, we partner with our donors to keep them well.  For our employees we offer free hepatitis and flu vaccine so that they can remain healthy despite being exposed to infectious disease.  After all, if employees are out ill, it challenges our ability to fulfill our mission.  We also offer a free healthcare wellness program that focuses on weight management, healthy eating and smoking cessation.  We believe that healthy employees are the backbone for a healthy organization which contributes to a healthy community.

Our new name reflects the evolution of this four-year journey.  “Life” for saving lives and “Stream” for ensuring the continuous flow of blood products from donors to patients.

Welcome to LifeStream – the future of blood services.

Give Blood – Get Blood!

Just when you’re feeling the effects of cooler fall weather and the anticipation of a ghoulishly ghost-y Halloween, LifeStream is offering a bottle of Stage Blood, compliments of Fun Corner in San Bernardino, to all participants from Sunday, October 12 through Friday, October 31.

Creep on over to a donor center or mobile blood drive near you with your scary-looking friends, ghosts and ghouls, fiends and fools. Donors will also receive points as part of the “Gift of Life” Donor Loyalty Program that can be redeemed for items in LifeStream’s online store, located at www.LStream.org.

Region’s Largest, Longest Running LifeStream Expands Local Presence, Unveils New Name

Community Leaders Welcome LifeStream at La Quinta Donor Center Grand Opening

A trusted, long-time community partner known to thousands of people whose lives have been saved as a result of its blood products, has a new Donor Center– and a new name, too. LifeStream, the new name for the LifeStream of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, formally opened its newest blood center in La Quinta today, drawing leaders from across the Coachella Valley to help mark the event.

The gleaming new 8,000-square-foot facility, located on Corporate Centre Way, near Highway 111 and Adams Street, offers the very latest in blood collection, transfusion and testing technologies. LifeStream’s desert facility employs a staff of 25 medical professionals, including nurses, donor specialists, lab technicians and a mobile operations team. It becomes the sixth center in the nonprofit organization’s network, which extends throughout southern California.

Blood collection is 100 percent automated, fully utilizing technology to collect the appropriate blood product, based on the donor’s blood type.  That’s important to hospitals such as Desert Regional Medical Center, which LifeStream serves as its primary blood supplier, as well as Eisenhower Medical Center and JFK Memorial Hospital, which rely on the organization for its vast array of specialty blood products.  These are important due to the increasing frequency of sophisticated surgeries that are now performed locally.

What donors will appreciate, however, is the comfort and ease of giving blood.  Amenities include internet-access chairs that allow the donor to surf the web or download movies for viewing, as well as an internet café stocked with freshly brewed Starbuck’s coffee and plenty of tasty, healthy snacks and beverages that complete the donor giving experience.

The LifeStream name captures the spirit of the organization’s mission to save lives by connecting donors with patients and promoting wellness.

”When we started serving the Desert in 1951, our sole purpose was to collect and distribute blood,” says Dr. Rick Axelrod, President and Medical Director.  Although this core responsibility has not changed, we’ve expanded it significantly, strengthening our mission to connect donors and patients through the gift of blood.”

LifeStream provides more than 10,000 blood products each year for patient transfusions in the Coachella Valley, and in addition, has served as the exclusive provider for critically ill Valley residents who travel to Loma Linda University Medical Center for life-saving treatments.  It is the only local facility licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and operates the only blood typing laboratory in the region accredited by the American Association of LifeStreams.

About LifeStream

LifeStream, as the new name for the LifeStream of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, employs more than 400 medical professionals.  It also operates seven mobile units and supplies blood products to some 43 medical centers. The private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization receives more than 500 donations daily, and provides in excess of 175,000 transfusions each year. For additional information, please contact the organization at 1.800.879.4484 or visit www.LStream.org

LifeStream Vice President to Make Presentation at International Conference in Montreal

SAN BERNARDINO AND RIVERSIDE COUNTIES, CALIF., - Julianna Quarles, Vice President, Technical Operations at LifeStream, the new name for the LifeStream of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, will give a presentation at the AABB Montréal 2008 Annual Meeting and TXPO October 4 through 7, 2008.
Quarles’ presentation is titled “Collecting the ‘Right Products’ from Each Donor: One Center’s Approach.” In order for LifeStream to meet the growing demand for blood products, a multi-faceted approach to collecting the “right products” from each apheresis donor based on eligibility, physiological capability and blood type was begun in July 2006.

In general, the “right products” focus is on red cell collection from type O donors, plasma collection from type A and AB donors, and platelet collection from type A, B and AB donors. As a result of this automated approach, there was a 26 percent increase in type O red cells and a 33 percent increase in plasma units from donors with blood types A and AB.

AABB (formerly American Association of LifeStreams) is an international association representing individuals and institutions involved in activities related to transfusion and cellular therapies, including transplantation medicine. AABB member facilities are responsible for collecting virtually all of the nation’s blood supply and transfusing more than 80 percent of all blood and blood components used in the United States. AABB’s Montréal 2008 Annual Meeting and TXPO provides an opportunity for industry professionals to network with colleagues and learn about the latest in LifeStreaming, transfusion medicine and cellular and related biological therapies.

LifeStream was founded in 1951 as a private, not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization by the medical societies of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. LifeStream serves 43 medical facilities in Southern California and receives more than 500 donations daily in order to support 175,000 transfusions annually. For additional information, please contact LifeStream at www.LStream.org or 1.800.879.4484.

Blood and Marrow Drive

KayDance Johnson

Meet KayDance Elazjah-Amira Johnson. It is a big, beautiful name for a little girl of 23-months. Diagnosed in September of 2007 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

"I am so impressed with KayDance's inner strength, her energy and joy," says KayDance's father JayShawn Johnson. "Through all of it she has stayed lively, and pleasant, and even participates with the nurses. She is a patient that the medical staff looks forward to seeing on their shift. I believe it's because her essence is an atmospheric boost."

JayShawn says it is important to understand that signing up for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry through live drives or on marrow.org is the first and biggest step. "It is commendable and makes a true and lasting impact. It sets the tone. The immediate goal is that it might inspire others to donate, who may be the right match for someone and lives will be ultimately changed."

Honor Your Mom

Honor your mom this Mother's Day by joining the National Marrow Donor Registry and donating blood. Sharing the gift of life is a great way to say, "Thanks, Mom!"

For giving the gift of life, all participants will receive points as part of the "Gift of Life" Donor Loyalty Program that may be redeemed for items through LifeStream's online store at LifeStream.org.
