April is Donate Life Month!
Established in 2003, it serves to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.
Awareness is on the rise. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), the year 2015 marked the first time more than 30,000 organ transplants were completed in the United States.
Each of these transplants represents hopes for a better day to share the company of family and friends, and a renewed opportunity to fulfil dreams.
None of those happy endings are possible without voluntary blood donors.
Transplant surgeries require up to 180,000 units of transfused blood per year. In fact, liver, kidney and heart recipients are counting on multiple voluntary blood donors to give what’s needed. For example, a liver transplant can require 6 to 10 red blood cell units; 20 units of plasma and 10 units of platelets.
LifeStream salutes those who willingly sign up to be an organ, tissue or eye donor. And we can never forget the contributions of those who make the transplants possible.
Give blood this month. Maybe your gift during Donate Life Month will give someone a second chance at life.
