LifeStream receives grant for service to populations impacted by COVID-19 pandemic
SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. – LifeStream Blood Bank, the exclusive supplier of blood products and services to all Coachella Valley-area hospitals, has been awarded a $10,000 grant through the Regional Access Foundation and Desert Healthcare District Collective Emergency Fund. Grant funds have been designated to 501(c)3 organizations providing services to vulnerable populations adversely impacted by the COVID-19 public health crisis.
“We are thankful for Regional Access Foundation and Desert Healthcare District’s generosity to local nonprofits at this difficult time, and particularly grateful that our work would be so honored,” said Rick Axelrod, MD, LifeStream’s president, CEO and medical director.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, LifeStream has continued to collect blood from voluntary donors at its La Quinta and Rancho Mirage centers, and its five other fixed-site locations, all while putting additional donor safeguards in place.
LifeStream requires all staff and donors wear face coverings; submit to temperature check before admittance to the donor waiting area; donation appointments be set to ensure social distancing guidelines are adhered to; and has enhanced all cleaning and disinfecting protocols.
LifeStream also is among blood banks nationwide collecting COVID-19 convalescent plasma donations from recovered COVID-19 patients in the hopes the plasma can be transfused into seriously ill COVID-19 patients and assist in recovery.
LifeStream collected its first such donation April 18 in La Quinta; enough product to be transfused into two current COVID-19 patients at Desert Regional Medical Center.
More information on the convalescent plasma program, including pre-screening instructions, may be found at LStream.org/covidplasma
LifeStream is a nonprofit, comprehensive blood bank that provides blood products and services to more than 80 Southern Californian hospitals.
