MEDIA ADVISORY: LifeStream schedules first COVID-19 convalescent plasma donation Saturday, April 18 at La Quinta Donor Center

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. – LifeStream Blood Bank is scheduled to collect its first convalescent plasma donation from a recovered COVID-19 patient Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at LifeStream’s La Quinta Donor Center, 79-215 Corporate Centre Drive.

The potential donor has met all pre-screening donation requirements under COVID-19 convalescent plasma guidelines; however, all other standard pre-blood donation screening benchmarks (hemoglobin level, basic vital signs such as pulse, temperature, and blood pressure, and detailed health history questions) also must be satisfied for the donation to proceed.

Individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 may have immune-boosting antibodies in their plasma – called “convalescent plasma” – that could be used to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients. A number of LifeStream hospital partners, operating under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) protocols, are prepared to refer potential donors who have recovered for at least 14 days after their symptoms completely resolved. Criteria for eligibility are available at LStream.org/covidplasma.

“Though convalescent plasma has not been fully proven to be effective in patients with COVID-19, there are encouraging signs from early studies,” said Joe Chaffin, MD, LifeStream’s chief medical officer. “By collecting this product, LifeStream is proud to help hospitals develop better understanding of the use of convalescent plasma for patients in desperate need.”

Potential donors must be pre-screened by healthcare providers and LifeStream personnel, and appointments will be made only by LifeStream staff. Once eligibility is confirmed, LifeStream will work with donors to collect and process the plasma for COVID-19 patient treatment.

LifeStream provides blood products and services to more than 80 hospitals in six Southern California counties. To maximize donor safety and to ensure social distance guidelines are adhered to, appointments are required to donate plasma at LifeStream centers in San Bernardino, Riverside, Ontario, Victorville, Murrieta, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta.
