It is Safe to Donate Blood
We are asking donors to please keep your scheduled donation appointments and asking blood drive chairpersons to maintain their scheduled mobile drives so that patient needs across our service area continue to be met.
Donors 65 and older: LifeStream centers and mobile drives are in tightly-controlled environments designed to keep donors safe. Please keep your appointment to give blood. Donating blood is NEEDED to save patients’ lives.

Medical Professionals Urge Public To Give Blood
Steps We’re Taking
- Only healthy people are encouraged to give blood. In fact, donors must be feeling well and free of respiratory illness symptoms, including fever, to be eligible to donate.
- People who meet certain travel and other at-risk criteria for COVID-19 are deferred ahead of time from donating.
- To practice social distancing and avoid overcrowding, appointments to give blood are required at donor centers at this time.
- We are limiting the amount of people permitted in the donor centers and mobile drives. We may ask you to leave a mobile phone number and wait in your car until your turn is called.
- We have implemented new screening processes including temperature checks BEFORE the donor walks into a donor center or mobile drive.
- We are spacing chairs 6 feet apart in waiting and donation areas, per guidance from the CDC.
- Our staff wear gloves and personal protective gear; they wipe down donor-touched areas often and after every collection using a disinfectant.
- Staff use sterile, single-use collection sets for each donor and scrub the donor’s arm for 30 seconds before the collection.
- We are requiring staff to self-monitor, including temperature checks, to ensure they are healthy before arriving to work.
- Staff who don’t feel well are required to stay home.
- In addition to the vigorous FDA-mandated testing of all blood components donated, LifeStream staff follows rigorous safety and sterilization protocol within our mobile and fixed donation centers. This is part of our commitment to our donors – safety from reception to collection to the end product.
Notice to Donors: Do NOT Give Blood IF:
- Within the last 28 days you have been outside of the US or on a cruise.
- You have had a fever, cough or shortness of breath within the last 14 days.
- You have lived with or been in close contact with individuals diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19 infection.
- You have been diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19 infection.
- If you want to get tested for COVID-19. Blood banks do NOT test for the virus. See below for more info.
Steps You Can Take
Actions you can take to keep safe, according to the CDC:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and avoid hand to face contact, a primary mechanism of transmission;
- Clean work surfaces in accordance with established infection control procedures;
- Avoid close contact (within about 6 feet) with those who are ill;
- Self-quarantine after caring for someone who is sick;
- Stay home when experiencing symptoms of illness; and
- Use good cough etiquette; cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth.
FDA and Blood Industry COVID-19 Response:
- There is no known risk to the safety of the nation’s blood supply and there are no reports of spread of this or any respiratory virus, by blood donation
- Giving blood is not a risk for donors to contract COVID-19.
- Misinformation will negatively impact the blood supply. (For example, if donors refrain from blood donation over fear of contracting the virus.)
- LifeStream is actively monitoring the situation, in collaboration with the AABB, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other blood banks. And we will efficiently implement any necessary additional changes as new information emerges from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or our regulatory bodies.
Are Blood Centers Testing Donations for COVID-19?
There are no donor screening tests available for this virus. All donors are temperature checked and screened for symptoms of illness prior to entering our centers or blood drives, and further screened during the interview process.
- Prior to entering the blood collection area, we ask a series of questions designed to ensure a donor is not at higher risk for a COVID-19 infection.
- After the questions but before you enter the facility, we take the donor’s temperature.
- In our pre-donation questionnaire, we again ask “Are you feeling healthy and well today?”
- In our pre-donation mini-physical, we assess body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and hemoglobin level.
- Donors who aren’t feeling well or exhibit symptoms of illness are deferred from donation.
AABB Interogranizational Task Force
LifeStream is a member of AABB, an international, nonprofit association representing individuals and institutions involved in the field of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. AABB’s Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism is urging individuals to make and keep donation appointments and organized blood drives to ensure the continued adequacy of the blood supply.
