Shooting Survivor Gives Back Through Blood Donation
Nurjahan Boulden was just 21 years old when she was shot with an assault rifle while on vacation in Toronto, Canada in 2006. Now, she works with survivors across the country and encourages others to find acts of kindness (big or small) that they can do to bring hope to themselves and others after mass shootings take place.
Nurjahan is not only a survivor, but she is a LifeStream blood donor. Nurjahan gave the gift of life at LifeStream’s Ontario Donor Center and is encouraging others to help save lives. In fact, she has already scheduled her next appointment.
“I was so moved when a fellow survivor reached out to me saying she was trying to get 22 people to donate blood in honor of the 22 victims who were killed in her hometown of El Paso this week,” Nurjahan said. “I wanted to do my part to spread that kindness and hope with her. It always blows my mind how one choice, one idea, one small gesture can literally save lives. And if each of us find something we can do to help spread hope, together we can change the world.”
Thank you, Nurjahan, for giving the gift of life, for spreading the word about the urgent need for blood, and for helping other survivors feel safe again.

Happy Birthday, Charon!
Join LifeStream in wishing Charon Simmons a Happy 30th Birthday! He’s still a young man, but life already has been quite a journey. In summer 2011, Charon suffered a sickle-cell crisis, went into full cardiac arrest, and experienced multiple organ failure. But Charon – with a strong family unit and LifeStream blood donors on the team – fought back. Treatment required a full body flush of blood to replenish his system. With spirit and determination, Charon slowly made progress.
Eventually, he got his life back, completed his college education, and set out to make his mark on the world. Now an ambassador and spokesperson for those living with the challenges of sickle cell disease, Charon also is a strong advocate for voluntary blood donation.
Inspired by Charon’s story like we are? Want to honor him? It’s National Blood Donor Month. Giving blood so others may live is a gift he’d gladly accept! For LifeStream’s dramatic 2012 video profiling Charon’s crisis and recovery, check below:
