Deputy Darnell Calhoun, Riverside County Sheriff

Our hearts and thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who was killed in the line of duty after responding to a domestic violence call on Friday, Jan. 13.

Calhoun is the second Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy killed in the line of duty in two weeks. Deputy Isaiah Cordero was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Dec. 29.

These horrific incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of voluntary blood donation and community members coming together to protect our local blood supply. Few understand more about the necessity of a safe, ample community blood supply than our local law enforcement.

In 2021, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Whitson was shot in the line of duty. LifeStream blood donors were part of the incredible team who saved his life.

Recently, Deputy Whitson shared what blood donation means to him and his family. Watch his story below.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Whitson is a grateful recipient of blood donation.
His story is a perfect example of why donating blood on a regular basis is so important to our community.

Check out the videos below to learn more about how blood donations saved lives!

When Lexi was running a mile in eighth grade, she passed out. After repeated blackout episodes, a heart specialist found that she had restrictive cardiomyopathy, a disease that would not allow her heart to relax and would lead to heart failure. Lexi was now in need of a heart transplant.
At just 2 years of age, Mariah suffered a severe facial injury. To recover, she needed 10 gallons of blood. Generous LifeStream blood donors helped save her.
Adrian was struck by debris when a car crashed through the school fence as he played at recess. The injuries to Adrian’s right leg were so grave that amputation was necessary.
At just 5 months, Paisley received a heart transplant. Paisley needed many transfusions while the search was on for a compatible heart.

Shooting Survivor Gives Back Through Blood Donation

Nurjahan Boulden, LifeStream blood donor and shooting survivor, gives blood Aug. 7, 2019 at LifeStream’s Ontario Donor Center.

Nurjahan Boulden was just 21 years old when she was shot with an assault rifle while on vacation in Toronto, Canada in 2006. Now, she works with survivors across the country and encourages others to find acts of kindness (big or small) that they can do to bring hope to themselves and others after mass shootings take place.

Nurjahan schedules her next blood donation appointment.

Nurjahan is not only a survivor, but she is a LifeStream blood donor. Nurjahan gave the gift of life at LifeStream’s Ontario Donor Center and is encouraging others to help save lives. In fact, she has already scheduled her next appointment.

“I was so moved when a fellow survivor reached out to me saying she was trying to get 22 people to donate blood in honor of the 22 victims who were killed in her hometown of El Paso this week,” Nurjahan said. “I wanted to do my part to spread that kindness and hope with her. It always blows my mind how one choice, one idea, one small gesture can literally save lives. And if each of us find something we can do to help spread hope, together we can change the world.”

Thank you, Nurjahan, for giving the gift of life, for spreading the word about the urgent need for blood, and for helping other survivors feel safe again.

Inspired by Nurjahan’s story? Schedule your appointment to donate today! Click below, call 800.879.4484 or download the LifeStream mobile app. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Remember, for every blood donation received at LifeStream donor centers and mobile blood drives through Sunday, Aug. 11, LifeStream is making a financial contribution to the Gilroy Foundation, the El Paso Community Foundation and the Dayton Foundation.
